LOTTO presents the illusion of a real lottery kiosk: from one perspective, it appears to be a complete booth where visitors can try their luck for the grand prize—a cash amount won when the ticket number matches the purchased ticket. But on closer inspection, it is a trompe-l’œil: a façade that suggests the booth without actually existing. Just as the hope for a big win is often only an illusion, the work plays with our expectations and shows that what seems appealing and real can sometimes be mere appearance.
In Aruba, the game is very popular, and lottery kiosks in the characteristic colors of blue, pink, and white can be seen everywhere, often closed off with a gate when the office is shut. The artwork LOTTO has a permanent place in the garden of Ateliers 89.
